Types of Dental Implants
Dental implants are one of the most widely accepted tooth replacement techniques in dentistry today. Results are effective, predictable, and sustainable for the long term with dental implants. Studio Dentistry, led by Dr. Rob Strain, is a premier dental office providing dental implants and other procedures. The practice receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and adjacent communities.
Purpose of Implants
The cosmetic dentist may recommend a single implant to secure a dental crown. Multiple implants may be recommended to secure multiple crowns or a bridge. In some cases, the dentist may use several implants placed at strategic locations to secure dentures on the lower arch, upper arch, or both. In some cases, where the jaw bone is not sufficiently dense to support a full-sized implant, the dentist may recommend a mini implant.
Options in Dental Implants
Implants to Hold Crown or Bridge
If the patient needs to replace a single missing or decayed tooth, a dental crown supported by an implant may be used instead of a traditional fixed bridge. The implant offers several advantages over a traditional bridge, and does not impact the condition of adjacent teeth.
This has made implants a preferred dentistry solution as against traditional bridges. In a few cases, where a dental bridge replaces multiple teeth, the dentist may use one or more implants to hold the bridge more securely.
Implants to Retain Dentures
The cosmetic dentist may use dental implants as an anchor to support full or partial denture. Four to six implant posts are generally used in strategic locations within the jaw to achieve denture stability. The implants can withstand maximum biting pressure where the bone is most dense. Lower or upper dentures or partials on either arch can be secured with implants.
Implant-retained dentures are permanent or removable as per requirement. Patient’s quality of life improves with the implants that can make the dentures more stable and secure. Eating out and speaking in public will come naturally to patients who are secure about their dentures. Dr. Strain’s dental office provides the implant treatment to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding areas.
Dental implants can be secured to four or six implant posts. The All-on-4 implant offered by Nobel Biocare involves placing the implant on four titanium posts. A high degree of precision with regard to the placement of an implant post is possible for this implant.
The dentist may secure four to six implant posts at strategic points into the jaw to retain the denture. A surgical guide may be used for greater precision. Implant retained dentures are usually fixed or non-removable. However, the dentist may make them removable if the patient specifically requires this.
Mini Dental Implant
Patients with inadequate jaw bone, those suffering from health problems, and the ones undergoing a bone grafting procedure will find it difficult to anchor a full-sized dental implant. In such cases, a mini dental implant may prove to be a practical option. These implants feature a screw instead of a post. The screw can be inserted directly into the jaw through the gums, and no sutures, flap surgery, or bone grafting is required.
