Dental implants represent the most widely accepted and most effective solution in modern dentistry to replace one or more missing teeth. Over the years, the dental implant technology has become highly advanced, resulting in an excellent success rate for this procedure.
It is important to choose an experienced cosmetic dentist with a proven track record in performing complex procedures such as dental implants. Studio Dentistry, a premier dental office led by well-known dentist Dr. Rob Strain, provides dental implants to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding areas.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are designed to replace the entire structure of the missing teeth, from root to crown. Without compromising the health of the adjacent teeth, a dental implant can restore the full form and function of a missing tooth on its own. Unlike traditional bridges, the implant does not require support from surrounding teeth.
When received from a dental office that is fully equipped to provide such advanced procedures, a dental implant supported crown, bridge or denture is the next best thing only to natural, healthy teeth. The implant is made of titanium or titanium alloy, and performs the role of an artificial root. Through a natural process of osseo-integration, the bone tissue fuses with the surgically embedded implant to produce the closest substitute to a natural tooth.
Implant dentistry procedure must be performed only after the dentist has determined the sufficient availability of bone in the affected area. As an experienced cosmetic dentist, Dr. Strain will assess the suitability of a candidate and only then recommend a procedure such as dental implants. Dr. Strain receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for this procedure.
If oral sedation has been decided for the procedure, the dentist will administer the sedative medication about one hour prior to the procedure. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, but the dentist may recommend the patient to arrange for someone to escort them back home after the surgery.
The dentist will make an opening in the gum and a space in the jaw for each implant post. After the post is placed into the precise location, it will be secured with an additive to support bone growth. The process of osseo-integration will occur naturally over a period of three to six months. The titanium implant will fuse with jawbone tissue to provide a strong foundation for tooth restoration.
If the implant is required to be placed in the front of the mouth, the dentist may provide a temporary crown during the osseo-integration period. This will be replaced with a permanent crown only once the dentist determines that the jaw has healed fully.
The good thing about dental implants is that they do not require any special care in the long run. The patient can care for them just the same as they would care for the other natural teeth. Brushing the teeth twice a day and flossing once a day is recommended to maintain good dental hygiene. The patient should make dental visits twice a year for long-term dental health and maintenance.
