Questions to Consider

Dentistry skills are bound to vary from one dentist to another, depending on their training, qualifications, and experience in various dental procedures. Prior to making a final decision about a procedure with a dentist, a patient should ask the following questions during the initial appointment:

  • Are you a general or a cosmetic dentist, and what type of dental procedures do you usually perform?
  • How many years of training and experience do you have in various dental procedures?
  • If I require any specialized procedure along with my dental treatment, would you be able to refer to an appropriate dental specialist?
  • What kind of dental techniques and technology are available at your dental office?
  • Do you keep updated with the latest innovations and advancements in dental technology and incorporate in your practice?
  • Do you have arrangements for oral sedation in case I feel anxious prior to the procedure?
  • If I am not satisfied with the final outcome of the dental procedure, would you be able to perform a revision procedure?
  • Do you have a policy for performing revision procedures?
  • Is your practice equipped to deal with any emergencies that may arise during the treatment?
  • Would you be available during all my appointments at your office for my dental treatment?
  • Do you receive patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas?
  • Can I review some of the patient testimonials or talk to one of your staff members to learn more about your practice?
  • Would you show me before and after photos related to my procedure so that I know what to expect from it?
  • How much would be the estimated cost for my procedure?
  • Will the cost include the charges for pre- and post-operative dental appointments, diagnostic tests, and other procedures?
  • What is the payment policy of your dental practice, and would you explain the schedule of payments?
  • Would your staff be able to guide or assist me with regard to my dental health insurance or financing of the procedure?
  • Are there any precautions or changes in my diet or lifestyle or existing medications that may be necessary for this procedure?
  • Are there any risks and complications associated with my dental treatment that I should be aware of?

An experienced dentist will usually address most of these questions on their own, and provide accurate and satisfactory answers to educate and reassure the patient, you, in every way. They have been asked these questions before and know why these questions are necessary. They understand what it is like to be sitting where you are.

Oral Sedation | Dentistry | Dental | Palm Desert | Palm SpringsOral sedation is an excellent solution to make the dental experience completely comfortable for a patient who is very concerned or nervous about receiving a dental procedure. Oral sedation is a key advancement in dentistry that has been adopted by some of the leading dental practices around the country.

Patients with higher anxiety levels, suffering from severe jaw soreness, or having a gag reflex can benefit from this solution. Dr. Rob Strain is a well-known cosmetic dentist providing oral sedation services to suitable candidates who seek any kind of dental treatments. Dr. Strain provides cutting edge dental solutions to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding communities.

How does it Work?

Oral sedation usually includes mild medications with a sedative effect, which are taken by the patient as per the directions of the dentist. The patient will typically be asked to take a pill the night before and one hour prior to their appointment at the dental office. The patient will also require someone to drive them to the dental office.

Once the patient arrives at the office, the cosmetic dentist and their team will arrange everything to keep the patient comfortable and relaxed. Most patients will be very relaxed with the oral sedation, but they will not be unconscious. The patient will be able to breathe on their own and respond to the dentist’s directions.

Once the procedure is completed and the patient is ready to return home, they will again require someone to drive them back. The oral sedative pills can have a continuing effect for about three to six hours, depending on an individual’s metabolic response. Most patients may not even remember visiting the dental office the day after the appointment.

Administering the Medication

Oral sedatives are the safest and most commonly accepted solution in sedation dentistry. These sedatives may be administered to the patient in a variety of ways. It could be a pill taken by mouth, kept under the tongue, a powder spray inhaled through the nose, or taken intravenously.

Dr. Strain is highly experienced in sedation dentistry procedures. He is able to perform complex and prolonged procedures while the patient remains completely relaxed throughout under the influence of oral sedation. Dr. Strain provides a wide range of dental procedures to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas.

Types of Oral Sedatives

Dentists offering oral sedation continue to draw upon an ever-expanding list of new and improved sedatives that are designed to minimize discomfort and anxiety. Some of the latest medications in this area are more powerful and have minimal or no unpleasant side effects. But all medications differ from each other, and may be used individually or in combination as per the protocol.

Some of the oral sedatives are designed to act quickly, but they may weaken in potency equally quickly. Some other sedatives are designed to take effect slowly but last for hours. The dentist will assess a number of factors before determining the most appropriate and safest choice for a patient.

TMJ Treatment | Cosmetic Dentistry | Palm Springs Palm Desert DentalThe temporomandibular joint, commonly known as TMJ, is positioned between the upper and lower jaws. Any dysfunction related to joint can result in pain in the joint or the surrounding muscle tissue attached to it. TMJ condition should be treated by a trained and experienced general or cosmetic dentist who has performed such procedures in the past.

Studio Dentistry, led by Dr. Rob Strain, provides TMJ and other advanced treatments. Dr. Strain has over 30 years of experience in treating complex dental conditions, including TMJ. Dr. Strain’s dental office provides TMJ treatment to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding communities.

Causes

Excessive movement of the jaw, repetitive motions such as yawning, or a certain dental procedure may lead to TMJ pain. Other conditions that may contribute to TMJ include clenching of teeth, overuse of jaws due to chewing habit, poor posture, malocclusions, traumatic injury to the mouth or jaw, or degenerative diseases such as tumor or arthritis. An experienced restorative and cosmetic dentist will try to determine the cause of pain before recommending the appropriate treatment.

Early Pain Relief

To deliver early relief to a patient suffering from acute TMJ pain and discomfort, a preliminary palliative dentistry treatment may be administered. Muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory medications, and bite guards are some of the key treatments that can be applied almost immediately to provide relief.

Dr. Strain may also recommend bite adjustment and behavior corrections to achieve better relief. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for TMJ treatment.

Advanced Treatments

The following more advanced treatment alternatives may be available to address TMJ pain if the condition does not improve with palliative solutions.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

A low level of electric current is passed through the targeted area to achieve relief from pain. The current will stimulate the nerves and help to relax the jaw joint and facial muscles in the area.

Ultrasound Treatment

Ultrasound waves may be delivered to the painful area to achieve relief in a non-invasive manner. The ultrasound energy will produce deep heat directly over the joint area to provide relief from jaw immobility and soreness.

Trigger-point Injections

Pain relieving drugs or a local anesthetic may be administered directly into the trigger-point areas or the tender facial muscles through injections. This can help provide instant relief from the pain.

Laser or RF Therapy

Low level laser therapy or radio frequency (RF) therapy may be used to treatment TMJ. The heat energy generated through these treatments will improve blood circulation and stimulate the joint. This will enhance jaw mobility and reduce the pain and inflammation.

Surgery

Arthrocentesis surgical procedure may be used in more severe conditions of TMJ. The procedure will involve the use of special surgical tools to remove damaged tissue or unlock the stuck joint. With the use of an arthroscope, the surgeon can make the procedure less invasive and more targeted for better results. Open joint surgery may be performed in exceptionally severe cases.
