Dentures | Palm Springs Dentist | Rancho Mirage |Palm Desert DentistryDentures are removable appliances designed to replace missing teeth and restore a natural looking smile. Patients who have lost multiple teeth in the upper or lower jaw, or both, can have them replaced for functional as well as aesthetic benefits. The procedure is ideal when all or most of the teeth are lost, or the patient is looking for a less invasive and more affordable solution.

Dr. Rob Strain is a leading cosmetic dentist providing dentures and various other restorative treatments for teeth and gums. Dr. Strain will carefully evaluate a patient’s oral health condition and their personal aesthetic goals before recommending dentures. Patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive dentures from Dr. Strain.

Benefits

Dentures offer both functional and aesthetic benefits. At a functional level, the patient will find it easier to eat and speak better than they could without teeth. High quality dentures can be produced to resemble natural teeth, which can restore or even improve the smile.

When an individual has lost all or most of the teeth, it can cause the facial muscles to sag and make the person appear older. Dentures will help to fill out the appearance of the face and enhance facial profile.

Types of Dentures

Advancements in dentistry have led to improvements in the fabrication of dentures. Different types of dentures are available today to suit the unique needs of patients.

Conventional Dentures

These are full, removable dentures that are customized according to the natural dimensions and position of the teeth. If any teeth are remaining in the upper or lower jaw, the dentist will remove them to create complete space for conventional dentures. These will be fabricated once the tissue healing is completed after extraction. The procedure may take several months, but the results are highly satisfying and sustainable in the long run.

Immediate Dentures

These removable dentures are fitted the same day that the remaining teeth are extracted. This is a temporary arrangement to ensure that the patient does not have to be without teeth during the period of healing. The dentist will take measurements and create models of the jaw. Once the jaw healing is completed, new permanent dentures may have to be created or the existing immediate dentures may be relined in some cases.

Over-dentures

Sometimes it may be possible to preserve some of the teeth to sustain the jawbone and provide support and stability to the denture. An over-denture fits over a small number of remaining healthy teeth after they have been prepared. The same function may also be served by dental implants, if needed. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for dentures.

Post-Treatment

New dentures are likely to feel uncomfortable or awkward for a few days until the patient becomes accustomed to them. The muscles of the tongue and cheek will gradually learn to keep them in place. Minor soreness or irritation may occur initially, and saliva flow may increase. These temporary problems will go away in a few days.

Sensitive Teeth | Palm Springs Dentist | Rancho Mirage | Palm DesertIf hot or cold foods and drinks become a painful experience, it could be a case of sensitive teeth. The problem may also cause occasional discomfort during brushing or flossing. Potential causes of sensitive teeth include tooth decay, gum disease, worn fillings, worn tooth enamel, exposed tooth root, and fractured teeth.

Dr. Rob Strain is an experienced general and cosmetic dentist providing proven and effective treatments for sensitive teeth. Patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations have an opportunity to receive cutting edge dental procedures from Dr. Strain.

Primary Cause

In natural, healthy teeth, the part above the gum line or the crowns of the teeth are protected by a thin layer of enamel. Below the gum line, a layer called cementum provides protection to the tooth root. Underneath both the cementum and the enamel lies dentin.

Dentin has a lesser density as compared to cementum and enamel, and contains tiny canals or microscopic tubules. When dentin experiences loss of its protective covering of cementum or enamel, the tubules allow cold or heat or sticky or acidic foods to reach the cells and nerves inside the tooth. Gum recession may also cause the dentin to be exposed. This can result in hypersensitivity of teeth.

Treatments

A number of treatments in dentistry are available to resolve the problem of sensitive teeth. The type of treatment will be determined according to the underlying cause of sensitivity. One or more of the following treatments may be recommended:

Desensitizing Toothpaste

This specialized toothpaste will include compounds that can help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve, providing relief to the patient. Regular application of this toothpaste may be required to achieve reduction in sensitivity.

Fluoride Gel

Exposed tooth roots may be varnished with a fluoride gel. This is an in-office procedure designed to fortify tooth enamel and minimize the transmission of sensations.

Bonding, Inlays or Crowns

Exposed root surfaces may be covered with white fillings or bonding. Inlays and crowns may be used to address deeper flaws or decay that may be causing tooth sensitivity.

Gum Tissue Grafting

Sometimes tooth sensitivity may occur when the gum tissue has been lost from the root. This condition can be treated with gum graft surgery to restore the lost tissue. It will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.

Root Canal

In some cases, tooth sensitivity may be persistent and severe, and not treatable by less invasive techniques. The dentist may recommend root canal procedure in such situations to eliminate the problem.

The dentist may also choose to apply dentin sealers to the exposed root surface to reduce sensitivity. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for sensitive teeth and other treatments.

Prevention

Stellar oral hygiene is the key to preventing tooth sensitivity. The dentist will advise patients to follow correct brushing and flossing techniques in order to clean every part of the teeth and mouth thoroughly. Rinsing with a fluoride and antiseptic mouthwash may be suggested.
