Wisdom Teeth | Dental Office | Rancho Mirage | Palm Springs |DentistryWisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, get their name by virtue of being the last teeth to erupt during young adulthood. Wisdom teeth are an important aspect of dentistry, and they must be examined by a dentist to ascertain whether they are healthy and correctly positioned.

While every case is unique, wisdom teeth may have be extracted in certain situations. The procedure should be performed by an experienced dentist to achieve a safe and desirable outcome. Dr. Rob Strain is a well-known cosmetic dentist providing state of the art dental solutions to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations.

Need for Extraction

The removal of wisdom teeth may be necessary if the dentist finds evidence of changes in the mouth such as:

  • Infection and pain
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Tumors
  • Cysts
  • Damage to adjacent teeth

Wisdom teeth removal may also be recommended as a part of a preventative, restorative, orthodontic, or periodontal treatment plan. Even when these teeth are not removed, the patient should visit the dentist for periodic monitoring because the potential for development problems will continue to exist. As a person ages, the risk of problems related to wisdom teeth may increase.

Removal of Wisdom Tooth

The ease or complexity of the extraction of wisdom teeth will depend on their position and stage of development. During the pre-extraction exam, the dentist will explain the procedure to the patient and prepare them for it. When the wisdom tooth has erupted fully through the gum, the dentist will be able to extract it as easily as any other tooth.

However, if the wisdom tooth is below the gum line and embedded in the jawbone, the dentist will make an incision in the gums. A portion of the bone that lies over the tooth will be removed through the incision to pave the way for removal of the targeted tooth. The tooth in this condition is often extracted in small sections rather than removed in a single piece.

With this approach, the dentist will be able to conserve the maximum part of the bone and get the tooth out. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for wisdom tooth removal.

Local Anesthesia and Sedation

The dentist will numb the wisdom tooth and the surrounding tissue with a local anesthetic. The anesthetic is similar to what is used to numb a tooth prior to filling a cavity. Mild oral or intravenous sedation may be applied additionally to keep the patient completely comfortable. In some cases, the dentist will advise the patient to have someone to drive them to and from the appointment.

Recovery

Bleeding may occur for a few hours following wisdom tooth extraction. Facial swelling may occur in the area of extraction, which can be minimized with ice packs. Pain medications may be prescribed by the dentist, if required. Antibiotics that may have been prescribed before treatment may be continued for a few days after the treatment.

Root Canal | Dental Office | Rancho Mirage | Palm Springs |DentistryA root canal is a time-tested dentistry treatment to repair and preserve a tooth structure that has suffered excessive decay or the tooth nerve has become infected. The procedure involves removal of the infected nerve and pulp, and cleaning and sealing of the inside of the tooth. In absence of treatment, the infection will spread to the surrounding tissue and may cause abscess formation.

The day-to-day functioning of the tooth is not impacted by a root canal procedure. However, the sensation of hot and cold will be lost on the treated tooth. Leading cosmetic dentist Dr. Rob Strain provides root canal and various other dental procedures to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations.

Causes

The pulp inside the tooth, which includes blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue may become infected, which will require a root canal treatment. The causes of infection occurring in the pulp may include:

  • A large cavity in the tooth
  • Multiple or repeated dental procedures on the same tooth
  • A chipped, cracked or broken tooth
  • An injury to the tooth, even when the damage is not visible

Root canal treatment can conserve the tooth structure and prevent the need for an extraction.

Need for Root Canal

The tooth nerve or pulp is infected or damaged, it will begin to degrade and harmful bacteria will start multiplying in the pulp chamber. The bacteria as well as other decayed debris may result in a spread of infection or an abscessed tooth. An abscess or a pus-filled pocket will occur when the infection has gone past the ends of the roots of the tooth.

Apart from an abscess, pulp infection can also result in:

  • Swelling that could spread to other areas, such as the face, neck, or head
  • Loss of bone around the tip of the root
  • Problems of drainage extending outward from the tooth root

Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for root canal treatment.

Procedure

A root canal treatment will require one to three visits to the dentist’s office. The dentist will first take an X-ray to review the shape of the root canals and identify any signs of infection in the surrounding bone. After evaluating the condition, the dentist may apply local anesthesia to numb the affected area near the tooth, and keep the patient comfortable.

The dentist will then place a rubber dam around the tooth to keep the area dry and free of saliva during the procedure. Thereafter, a hole will be drilled into the tooth to create access. The infected pulp, the decayed nerve tissue and other debris will be removed from the tooth. Specialized root canal files will be used to complete the clean-out process.

A series of root canal files of increasing diameter will be placed into the access hole and worked down the full length of the tooth. Scrubbing and scraping the sides of the root canals will be performed. Water may be used periodically to flush away the debris that comes from scrubbing and scraping.
