Wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, get their name by virtue of being the last teeth to erupt during young adulthood. Wisdom teeth are an important aspect of dentistry, and they must be examined by a dentist to ascertain whether they are healthy and correctly positioned.
While every case is unique, wisdom teeth may have be extracted in certain situations. The procedure should be performed by an experienced dentist to achieve a safe and desirable outcome. Dr. Rob Strain is a well-known cosmetic dentist providing state of the art dental solutions to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations.
Need for Extraction
The removal of wisdom teeth may be necessary if the dentist finds evidence of changes in the mouth such as:
- Infection and pain
- Severe tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Damage to adjacent teeth
Wisdom teeth removal may also be recommended as a part of a preventative, restorative, orthodontic, or periodontal treatment plan. Even when these teeth are not removed, the patient should visit the dentist for periodic monitoring because the potential for development problems will continue to exist. As a person ages, the risk of problems related to wisdom teeth may increase.
Removal of Wisdom Tooth
The ease or complexity of the extraction of wisdom teeth will depend on their position and stage of development. During the pre-extraction exam, the dentist will explain the procedure to the patient and prepare them for it. When the wisdom tooth has erupted fully through the gum, the dentist will be able to extract it as easily as any other tooth.
However, if the wisdom tooth is below the gum line and embedded in the jawbone, the dentist will make an incision in the gums. A portion of the bone that lies over the tooth will be removed through the incision to pave the way for removal of the targeted tooth. The tooth in this condition is often extracted in small sections rather than removed in a single piece.
With this approach, the dentist will be able to conserve the maximum part of the bone and get the tooth out. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for wisdom tooth removal.
Local Anesthesia and Sedation
The dentist will numb the wisdom tooth and the surrounding tissue with a local anesthetic. The anesthetic is similar to what is used to numb a tooth prior to filling a cavity. Mild oral or intravenous sedation may be applied additionally to keep the patient completely comfortable. In some cases, the dentist will advise the patient to have someone to drive them to and from the appointment.
Bleeding may occur for a few hours following wisdom tooth extraction. Facial swelling may occur in the area of extraction, which can be minimized with ice packs. Pain medications may be prescribed by the dentist, if required. Antibiotics that may have been prescribed before treatment may be continued for a few days after the treatment.
