Dental Cleaning | Dental Prophylaxis | Palm Desert | Palm Springs CADental sealants are a proven and effective dentistry solution to prevent cavities. The sealant is made of a synthetic material that is usually applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth, where majority of the decay takes place. The sealant acts as a barrier and allows the teeth to have a longer, healthier life.

While good dental hygiene will help remove plaque from the smooth surfaces of teeth, but the grooves and depressions in the back teeth may not be cleaned up completely. Dental sealants will preserve these vulnerable areas against plaque deposits. Leading cosmetic dentist Dr. Rob Strain provides dental sealants to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations.

How does it Work?

An experienced dentist can apply the sealants easily. The sealant will be painted onto the tooth enamel, where it will get bonded directly to the tooth and become firm. The plastic resin will cover the pits and fissures and act as a barrier against plaque and acids. The tooth surface will have protection against decay as long as the sealant remains intact.

The sealant is able to sustain the normal chewing forces and may last for many years before a reapplication may be required. The dentist will review the condition of the sealant during the period dental exams and reapply them when necessary.

Candidacy

The potential of dental decay occurring in the grooves and depressions of the molars and premolars comes early in life. Therefore, kids and teens are obvious candidates for dental sealants. However, adults can also benefit from sealants in the molars that are currently free of decay or fillings.

In case of children, the sealants should ideally be placed on their permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth have erupted. This will ensure that the teeth remain protected through the cavity-prone age group of six to 14 years.

In a few cases, the dental sealants may be recommended for baby teeth, when these teeth have deep fissures and grooves. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for dental sealants.

Procedure

The application of dental sealants involves a simple and painless procedure. The dentist will only take a few minutes to apply the sealant to properly seal each targeted tooth. The steps in the procedure are as follows:

  • To begin with, the affected teeth are thoroughly cleaned.
  • Each tooth is then dried properly, and an absorbent material or cotton is placed to keep it dry.
  • A special solution is applied on the chewing surfaces of the affected teeth to create a slight roughness. This will enable strong bonding of the sealant to the teeth.
  • The teeth are then rinsed and dried.
  • Finally, the sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel. A curing light may be used to help the sealant harden.

Dental sealants can offer protection against decay for up to 10 years, or even more. However, the dentist should check them for wearing or chipping during periodic dental exams.

Gum Disease | Dentistry | Rancho Mirage | Palm Springs | Dental OfficeGum disease is one of the common concerns in the field of dentistry that needs timely treatment. It involves an infection of the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. Gum disease is considered to be a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The challenge with this disease is that it is hard to detect and usually reveals no early signs or pain.

The main cause of gum disease is the plaque or the sticky film of harmful bacteria that gets formed on the teeth. Gum disease in its advanced stage is called periodontal disease. Experienced general, restorative, and cosmetic dentist Dr. Rob Strain provides gum disease treatments to patients in Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and surrounding locations.

Warning Signs

Patient should look for warning signs of gum disease, even when the problem is usually painless. They should ideally see their dentist twice a year for oral exams. Some of the warning signs of gum disease include:

  • Gums that tend to bleed easily
  • Redness, tenderness and swelling in gums
  • Visible gap between the gum tissue and teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Loosening or separating of permanent teeth
  • Changes in bite
  • Changes in the fit of partial dentures

Causes

Certain factors will increase the risk of gum disease, which include:

  • Heredity
  • Improper oral hygiene
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy
  • Crooked or crowded teeth that are difficult to clean
  • Certain types of drugs, including steroids

Gingivitis

The early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. If the patient feels any signs of suspected gingivitis, they should have it treated promptly by the dentist. The gums will be swollen, red and bleed easily in case of gingivitis. The disease is still reversible at this stage.

The dentist will perform a professional cleaning to eliminate the problem, and provide instructions on maintaining good dental hygiene. Dr. Strain’s dental office receives patients from Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, and nearby areas for the treatment of gingivitis as well as advanced gum disease.

Periodontitis

Periodontal disease is the advanced form of gum disease. If left untreated, this severe condition can lead to the loss of gum tissue and bone that support the teeth. This will result in the teeth feeling loose and moving around in the mouth. While this condition occurs mostly in adulthood, it can occur at any age. It progresses slowly in most cases, but there may be periods of rapid worsening. Research is going on to investigate any potential links between systemic diseases and periodontal disease.

Prevention

Regular dental check-ups and periodontal exams are vital for every adult, particularly because gum disease can occur without any warning signs. While professional dental treatments are available for gum disease, and periodontal surgery may be performed in extreme cases, it is strongly advisable to focus on prevention. Regular and proper brushing and flossing, eating a balanced diet, and scheduling periodic dental check-ups can keep gum disease at bay.
