Contact Us Today! The TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, the joint that occurs between the upper land lower jaws. When patients say they have “TMJ” they mean the have temporomandibular joint pain or pain in the surrounding tissues. The proper name for this is temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Pain in this region may come from the joint itself, but is more likely to come from the muscle tissues that attach to the joint.
TMD problems can be initiated by extreme jaw movements (yawning, dental procedures, etc.), overuse (chewing gum, clenching, etc.), malocclusion (teeth not fitting together properly), postural causes (computers, cell phones, cycling, etc.), degenerative diseases (arthritis), tumors and traumatic injuries.
If you are having TMD, we will assess the area of the pain, attempt to determine the cause, and institute initial palliative treatment when it can provide some relief. The most effective immediate treatments are anti-inflammatory medications, muscle relaxants and occlusal splints (bite guards). We may also suggest bite adjustment or alteration of behaviors until relief is achieved.
